Redwood partners with Ultium Cells

We’re excited to announce our partnership with BMW of North America to recycle lithium-ion batteries from all electrified vehicles in the BMW Group, including BMW, MINI, Rolls Royce, and BMW Motorrad. Redwood will work directly with BMW Group's extensive network of over 700 locations, including dealerships, distribution centers, and internal facilities, to facilitate the recovery of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries.
Our relationship with BMW of North America embodies our continued commitment to recovering end-of-life EV battery packs to ensure valuable materials are recycled, refined and returned to the battery supply chain to build increasingly sustainable electric vehicles. Unlike fossil fuels, the critical minerals inside of a battery are infinitely recyclable and are not consumed or lost in their lifetime of usage in the vehicle. Additionally, according to a recent Stanford University finding, Redwood’s processes have a significantly smaller environmental impact than conventional mining or other recycling technologies, reducing energy by 80%, CO2 emissions by 70%, and water by 80%.
Redwood has two US campuses—one outside Reno, Nevada, and the other under construction in Charleston, South Carolina—where we recycle, refine, and manufacture battery components. South Carolina has a rich automotive history, and is home to more than 500 automotive companies, including BMW. It is no coincidence that both Redwood and BMW have committed to establishing significant operations in this region. Redwood’s Carolina Campus is located near BMW Group’s Plant Spartanburg and Plant Woodruff, where the company will assemble at least six fully electric models, and the high-voltage battery packs for those vehicles, before the end of the decade.
BMW has been a pioneer in electrification for over a decade since the launch of their BMW i3 in 2013 and has continued to promote attractive design, performance, and cutting-edge technology in their electric-vehicle line-up.
Redwood’s mission to build a sustainable battery supply chain is realized through collaborations with leaders in the electric vehicle and clean energy sectors. Our partnership with BMW of North America represents a significant milestone towards building a more sustainable future. Together, Redwood and BMW are driving the future of electrification and leading the charge towards a more sustainable battery supply chain.
